Review of Handbook of Industrial and Systems Engineering (Hardcover)

Whether you are an experienced Industrial Engineer or work in one of the 40+ areas in which handbook reviews you will find this reference invaluable.As with any handbook, there are some tradeoffs between comrpehensiveness and space, but the editor has done a great job at making these choices wisely.In particular, the organization of the book flows well through the issues, while the depth of the individual chapters provides sufficient detail to provide a good understanding (and in many cases application) of the issue without losing itself in the details.Excellent references provide a route ahead for those who want to learn more.I'd expect this book to be the standard in its class for some time.

Review of Engineering Economy: Applying Theory to Practice (Engineering & Technology) (Hardcover)

Coming into the Cost Analysis class, I was not the biggest fan of engineering economy.This book, however, was very well written and very straight forward.I took this class at a graduate level, and felt it might be more appropriate at an undergraduate level.The concepts are very basic, and though it gets into more difficult problems near the end, the book does a good job of walking the reader through problems step-by-step.It also gives several good examples, though they are not as thorough in the last few chapters.

Overall, kudos to the author for making the subject comprehensible and interesting.

Review of What Every Engineer Should Know About Risk Engineering and Management (Hardcover)

An outstanding book for any field of engineering responsible to deliver projects in on schedule and under budget.Book is filled with examples from all areas that ease comprehension and make the book enjoyable to read. Specifically enjoyed the treatment of risk as more than the classic"potential to do harm", but also includes "opportunities forgain."The chapters on cost and schedule risk management arerefreshing, informative and through the use of examples allows the conceptsto be easily applied. At times the book can be whimsical, adding to thereaders enjoyment.I most strongly recommend this book to engineers whowant to sharpen their engineering and project management skills.

Review of Power Distribution Planning Reference Book, Second Edition (Power Engineering, 23) (Hardcover)

This text covers the many aspects of distribution planning with which engineers are faced.The text will be very helpful to engineers new to distribution planning as well as to those who have been working in the field for some time.The author helps the engineer understand how to quantify many of the variables which influence load growth, system upgrades, and customer expectations.

This book however, is not for the weak hearted.This is a HUGE text and will take some time for even the most diligent reader to complete.But, having looked at earlier versions by the author under the ABB publications in the mid-90's, this version is improved.

Review of Photovoltaic Systems Engineering, Second Edition (Hardcover)

As with the first edition, this update by Messenger and Ventre is very well suited for a one-semester upper division course in EE or Engineering Technology, or for self study if one knows basic electric (mainly DC) circuit theory.As the title suggests, it's an applications-oriented book, with semiconductor physics (appropriately) relegated to the last two chapters.There are very few derivatives or integrals in the text, and basic algebra is sufficient for the end-of-chapter exercises.Reading 20 pages per day and answering a dozen or so questions from the exercises will get the self-study student through the text in less than a month.PSE is also one of the few books recommended by the NABCEP for the Solar PV Installer Certification Exam.There are a number of excellent PV physics books available today, but this is the only complete and up-to-date systems engineering text I know of.
