Review of Roadwork: Rock & Roll Turned Inside Out (Hardcover)

disclamer. i'm tom's friend and colleague. but if you want to read about a real life in rock and roll and look at the pictures that go with it, "roadwork" is the book. the stones, the who, the eagles, the james gang, so many more...tom knows them, travelled with them, photographed them. and there's no hyperbole here, folks...just the straight story from a guy who lived the life, starting in the sixties in london and continuing on 'til today. and yeah, the story is captivating, but what will get you and what will stick with you long after you close the book,...are the pictures. candid, black and white photographs. in hotel rooms, backstage, airports, cars, dressing rooms, recording studios. minus the flash bulbs and the hair stylists. i was reminded of something i've always loved about tom's rock and roll photographs...the fact that you get a holistic view of what was going on. his camera pays the same respect to the roadies and the groupies as it does to the musicians. this is the real deal, folks. take it from me, buy this book. i did.

Review of Piano: The Making of a Steinway Concert Grand (Hardcover)

The best thing about this book is that it actually makes riveting reading. I read it from cover to cover like one would a good novel and was disappointed when I got to the end. This is because it is written well and clearly, and the author brings in just enough of his own personal experiences and anecdotes to make it seem real and human. This book may be less meaningful to you if you are not a piano player, but I'm not a piano player and admit to a secret life-long curiosity about how pianos work.James Barron includes so much atmosphere and quirky character in his book "Piano - The Making of a Steinway Concert Grand" you will be as charmed as I was whether you know one note from another or not. This book not only demonstrates why each piano is as individual as a person, but also contains charming descriptions of the scores of people involved in its birth and development into a grand concert stage presence. This is a real treat of a book to curl up with in an armchair, and afterwards you will find yourself never looking at a piano in the same way again.
